The Northumberland women's hockey league got off to a great start on Saturday 10th September 2011, with the annual Hazelwood Tournament. 10 teams entered the tournament, from Newcastle (3 teams), Whitley Bay (2 teams), Medics, Jesmond Parich Church, North Shields, Tynedale and Morpeth. The group stage of the competition saw semi finals drawn between Newcastle 2s and Medics, and Newcastle 1s v Whitley Bay 1s. Both semi finals were very closely fought and resulted in a final between Newcastle 2s and Whitley Bay 1s. The teams had already met in the group stage of the competition with Whitley Bay putting in a convincing performance to come out on top. However, the final saw a change in fortunes and Newcastle 2s, captained by Kate Jenkins, played extremely well to win 3-2. Newcastle's goals came from Jenny Henderson (2) and Becky Bradley. This result means that Newcastle retain the trophy from last year and will be aiming for the hat-trick in 2012!
