Race For Life 2005 |
| |
Yes we know, we both said we would never ever do this race
again. However in light of recent events we have decided
once again this year to run the Race for Life for Cancer
research. Last year, Ali [Hosie] and Caz [Rickard] ran the race for life. Ali ran in memory
of a life long friend and Caz on behalf of two friends,
Sally and Sharon, who were battling cancer at the time.
Both of these girls died in the last 2 months aged 30 and 32 after long battles
with their illness.
We are both running this year in the Newcastle race on the 10th of July in their
memory and we hope you won't mind dipping into your pockets
to sponsor either or both of us.
If you are happy to part with some cash please email us alison.hosie[at]ncl.ac.uk
and caz.rickard[at]virgin.net with your details (address,
postcode and
of course how much).
Or do it online right now thought the links below!

Newcastle – Preston Lodge Hockey Tournament 2005 |
| |
Following from a successful tournament in Edinburgh is 2003, Newcastle and Preston Lodge are hosting their 2005 tournament in Newcastle on April 16th. The teams competing this year include 2 home sides from Newcastle Ladies, a team from Whitley Bay hockey club and a touring team from Preston Lodge. The tournament will run from 12.30 until 3.30 at Westgate Community College – if you’re not playing, please come and support!
The idea of this tournament is primarily fun and lots of it. However, this year there will also be a raffle to raise money for Macmillan Nurses and St Oswald’s Hospice in memory of two local girls who recently lost their lives after bravely battling cancer during the last few years. All players will be asked to wear pink ribbons whilst they play in memory of Sally Fraser (Maloney) and Sharon Irwin.
It was with the support and dedication of the staff at St Oswald’s Hospice and the loving and devoted care of the Macmillan Nurses that enabled Sally and Sharon to be comfortable in the final stages of this horrendous disease. These nurses are truly amazing and we would like to do a little to show our appreciation for taking care of two unique, sadly missed and special friends.
Sally was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was approximately 5 months pregnant in summer 2003 with her first child and, sadly, died on Tuesday 15th February 2005, aged 30, leaving behind husband Phil and son Alfie. Sally was a keen hockey player and best mate of Laura Bond, who both played for Tynedale (Hexham) in their teens. More recently they reunited to play together again for the DSS during 2001/2002 in the Northumberland Ladies Hockey League, until Laura moved on to play for Newcastle Ladies and Sally stopped playing due to her pregnancy. Sally is also remembered by fellow hockey players Caroline Rickard (ex DSS and current Newcastle Ladies player), Susan Shotton (ex DSS player of 15 years), Emma Wright (ex DSS player and now playing for a team in Derbyshire where she currently lives), and Deb Cadle (ex Whitley Bay player in her teens and more recently a DSS player). Laura and Caroline also worked with Sally during 2001-2003.

Sharon was only 26 when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in January 1999 and, sadly, died on Tuesday 22nd March 2005, aged 32, leaving behind husband Billy. Sharon was Susan Shotton’s best mate and through Susan, became a good friend of 3 other Northumberland Ladies Hockey players Caroline Rickard, Emma Wright and Deb Cadle over the last 6 years. Sharon is also remembered in an article The world has lost a beautiful, brave woman" which appeared in The Evening Chronicle on March 28th.

In further efforts to raise money for these charities there will be some additional rules and penalties in force (and fines) – players will of course be informed of these additional rules and penalties prior to the start of the game!
If anyone wants to simply donate money to these causes then please contact ali hosie directly – alison.hosie[at]ncl.ac.uk
